Substrate Integrated Coaxial Line (SICL) Antennas and Circuits for mmwave applications

Recently, a concept to implement conventional coaxial line in planar substrate has been reported. The modified form of integrated coaxial line is known as substrate integrated coaxial line (SICL) which implements TEM transmission line in planar substrate using standard PCB fabrication technology. The SICL line is attractive since it operates over a large bandwidth with non dispersive propagation while maintaining a compact size. The shielded configuration of SICL line minimizes signal interference and crosstalk which is a major issue in millimeterwave communication system. Thus the new SICL technology opens a new frontier to design efficient millimeterwave circuits for compact low profile wireless applications. The area of research includes a detailed study of substrate integrated coaxial line and its integration with other planar technologies for its possible use in millimeterwave applications in Ku band (12-18 GHz) and Ka band (26-40 GHz).

Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) Antennas and feed network:

The SIW technology can be one of the most promising technology to implement horn antenna in commercially available planar dielectric substrate which can be easily integrated with other low profile microwave circuits. In this case, the top and bottom metallic plate of the commercially available substrate will be used as the top and bottom conducting wall of the horn antenna and the sidewall of the horn antenna will be implemented by using plated through hole (PTH) based rows of metallic via. Thus the proposed structure can generate high gain, low VSWR radiation while maintaining planar form. Since the proposed antenna and other planar microwave circuits will be realized in the same substrate, it will be easier to integrate them using simpler interconnects and will exhibit better performance.
